Militarized police assaults members of Mapuche Community Wente Winkul Mapu, Chile

April 9, 2013

About noon on Tuesday police officials of the city of Collipulli assaulted the Werken Daniel Melinao and his brother Luis, along with other community members in the parking of the market of Collipulli. As told by the Werken, they were in their parked van when militarized police arrive to harass them without provocation, and tired of the constant harassments by the police, they do not let themselves be bullied because the abuse of power is too much. That's when the beatings by militarized police started, without managing to cow the community members.

A few days earlier, on April 4, Wente Winkul Mapu reports mistreatment of its women by prison guards:

The Community Wente Winkul Mapu publicly denounces the following:

On Wednesday, April 3 we attended the regular visit of our minor Gabriel Valenzuela Montoya and currently Mapuche political prisoner being held in the juvenile detention center located in the town of Chol Chol.

On entering the mother of the minor, along with other community members, was treated in a racist manner by the Prison Guards, who verbally abused them, by mentioning racist epithets and completely violating the rights of the women, therefore there started a discussion because we will never allow our pu lamngen, mothers, sisters and daughters, to suffer any discriminatory act, let alone when they go to show solidarity with our young peñi imprisoned for an absurd setup.

As a Community we will be evaluating the steps to follow to not let this new abuse by an institution Chilean against the fight of our people
go unpunished.
